[It will be apparent to Makoto pretty quickly, on getting this, that Claudia didn't plan to send it, or probably even know it was being recorded. Good news: it's normal everyday stuff! She's in her dorm room, no sign of her roommate being around, making notes about something in a notebook. Her laptop's open and playing music.
Claudia would not have been singing along, even under her breath, if she knew her stupid Leaf was recording her. She's not bad by any means, just far too self-conscious about it to put herself in front of any kind of audience.
And then there's the matter of the song itself. Makoto might be able to place it as a close relation to one she knows, or she might even have heard it before, but there's a difference between hearing a song and understanding it.] So you want to play mind games? Well that's fine, go ahead, la la la I can't hear you - so here you are and you're a hundred thousand miles away, they say that absence makes the heart grow fungus.
[Claudia's mouth curves upward, like she finds that turn of phrase amusing. The video runs long enough for her Leaf to chirp smugly at you say you think there's a traitor among us, then cuts out.]
[Maybe she shouldn't have responded. It's such a private moment. But Makoto can, for all her foresight and planning, be an impulsive woman at times, and that's what gets her calling out from the Leaf.]
Claudia! Claudia!
[She knows that song, is all she can keep thinking.]
[If the outro weren't so quiet, Claudia might have missed Makoto's response entirely. As it is, by the time she finds her Leaf and answers, her laptop has shuffled on to another song, the same singer doing the bestworst breakup song in existence. (That one's on a different album, at least, so it probably shouldn't add to the inadvertent feelspunch.]
It's not about whether it was any good. [It's about the fact that Claudia Does Not Want to sing in front of an audience. She knows her strengths, and she is not at all convinced that's one of them.
But the second part does get her eyebrows going up.] Really. I would not necessarily have expected that one to gain ground in Japan, especially when it took another three albums for BNL to really get their due stateside.
[She shrugs] BNL? We just called them the Naked Ladies at my house. My dad was a fan of them. He would always sing the song about having a million dollars?
Barenaked Ladies, in full. Canadian band. "If I Had a Million Dollars" is on the same album, like... two tracks later? I don't have the whole thing downloaded, so I can't double-check for sure.
[Claudia's smile fades a little.] I don't remember who brought it home, in my case. Could've been my parents or either of my siblings. I was like five.
[Claire was the most likely culprit by a long shot, but again: Claudia was five.]
a completely unplanned video
