🦋 Personality

1. Has your character always believed in magic? Do they have something influencing their perspective on the supernatural/metaphysical/spiritual from their past? How do they feel about magic?


Makoto is a very pragmatic woman, and for this reason, has never put much stock in the idea of magic. She firmly believes that most magic can simply be explained away as an advanced form of science that they haven't discovered yet, and the Metaverse has not proven her wrong. The whole thing is based on science- er, psience- and the Metaverse has it's own laws and rules, same as anything. Just because you can't see something doesn't make it not real. While as a child she enjoyed fairytales as much as anyone, she knew it was just make-believe. If someone wants to call something magic, she'll let them, but only after reminding them it's probably got a scientific explanation- after all, people thought going to the moon would be an impossibility, and now here they are. There is always an explanation for everything, you just have to research hard enough to find it. And believe you, she's going to find it.


2. If your character could ask for one wish, and it's going to be magically granted without any consequence, what will it be and why?

Makoto would wish that her sister could truly see her. Battling an inferiority complex her entire life, Sae Niijima only made things worse for Makoto. She was a star student, a district attorney working for the SIU. Makoto, though several years younger, could never compare. After her father's death, Sae poured herself into her work, and Makoto felt that she'd been pushed to the side, and worked harder than ever to try to prove herself to her sister. She got straight As, was head of every club, worked closely with her school's administration and even became Student Council President. But nothing was ever good enough, and so she started to punish herself, pushing herself harder, trying to control whatever she could. Until Akechi came along. Akechi seemed to be everything that Makoto could not be. He was a star student, detective prince, and he had Sae's respect. It was like he'd somehow managed to be a better Niijima when he wasn't even one in the first place. Makoto loves her sister, and would do anything for her. But she's never felt like she's enough in her eyes, and if she could just make Sae see that for one moment, maybe that would be enough.


3. What song would a siren sing to your character to lure them closer? Why?

This is going to sound batshit insane, and Makoto admits it, but if she heard anyone singing Barenaked Ladies' If I Had A Million Dollars, she would be there in a heartbeat. One of her favorite memories is of singing and dancing that song around the table in her apartment with her sister and her father as he made pancakes. Makoto had no idea what much of the song meant- her English has never been incredibly strong- but that didn't stop her, or anyone else from singing along. The song to this day, makes her cry and makes her think of happier times before her father's death, and before Sae started viewing her as an inconvenience. She misses her father so much, wishes she could go back to those lighthearted days of breakfast for dinner, where he'd read to her before bed. Ever since her father died, things in the Niijima household changed, and there's no more singing in the kitchen, and certainly no breakfast for dinner.


4. Your character gets to return home, but when they do they learn that they've been gone for hundreds of years. How do they react?

Immediately, Makoto's thoughts are of her sister, and how much she has missed. She'll wonder what happened to her, if Sae missed her at all, what she's told her family, and if, by some chance, there are still some Niijimas running around Tokyo. Her second thought will be of the Metaverse and what has happened there. Have the distortions they were fighting against won, forever changing their world, has the cruel god truly won after all, or were others selected? After that, it's time to do some research. She'll be using whatever she can to try to piece together the last hundred years of history, so that she can better blend-in now that she's returned home. And, if she's sent back with her friends, she'll be putting together informational packets containing all that she's learned, tailored for her friends interests- Haru will get some information about new fast food trends, and new vegetables, Ryuji will get some important sports hilights, for example. Because, at the end of the day, it doesn't matter where she ends up, so long as she has her friends with her.
